How to Retain Organizational Knowledge Before Any Turnover

Updated: Jun 17

Turnover Happens. But the Worst Part of Turnover is When You Lose Critical Organizational Knowledge.

Organizational knowledge can't be brought back. So prepare for it. Sit your employees down and figure out the crucial organizational knowledge that they hold. Understand how many other people it is shared with.

Get it written down. Have it on your company's servers so that everyone can access it at any time. Have a company initiative where everyone does this, not just the people on your team. But if that can't happen, at least get it from the people on your team so that the knowledge will not disappear.

You may think, “Well, if I do something like that, everyone's going to think they're going to get fired.” That's why it is really helpful to have the whole organization do it. But even if it's just your team, just talk about how it's important that everyone has the same information as everybody else, so that they can be successful.

Make a plan. Get the company knowledge into documents that can be shared.
